Demons 28 Fighting Irish 60
Five tries in nine minutes seal Aberavon win
After a see-saw first half, Aberavon Fighting Irish scored five tries in nine second half minutes to beat Cardiff Demons 60-28 at Taff’s Well.

Cardiff took the lead in the seventh minute when Lewis Francis broke through the middle to ground under the posts.

Gareth Lewis equalised just four minutes later, running through the middle fending off tackles to score.

Mark Burke gave Aberavon the lead with a try under the posts in the 24th minute but Cardiff equalised three minutes later after Andre Boon struggled over.

Andrew Jones gave Cardiff the lead in the first set after kick-off. A Gareth Jones grubber kick was pounced on by John Byers who set up Jones to score.

But it was Aberavon who went in with a 22-18 half-time lead following a length of the field run from Richard Johnston and a Darren Ryan score after the ball was worked across the face of the posts.

The Fighting Irish added another try early in the second half after Richard Lewis scored in the corner but Demons pulled one back 15 minutes later after good work from Andy Jones set up John Byers.

Aberavon gained a two-try advantage in the 62nd minute after Scott O’Kelly was set up by Sean O’Brien.

They added another three in the next five minutes to vanquish any hopes of a Demons comeback. Gareth Lewis broke through the defence for his second, O’Kelly added another before Lewis completed his hat-trick to give them a 30-point lead.

Dennis Pugh extended the lead on 71 minutes with a try in the corner before Sean O’Brien put 60 points on the board for the visitors in the 79th minute.

But it was the Demons who had the final say with a breakaway try from Andy Jones.

This Saturday sees rugby's classic local derby match 13-man style when Cardiff take on Pontypridd's Valley Cougars. Both sides have equal records this season with a win and two defeats so will be equally as hungry for the points.

The Cougars will benefit player-wise from Pontypridd's rugby union season now completed while the Demons will be keen to shake off their loss to Aberavon and bounce back in front of their passionate home crowd. Kick off at Taff's Well RFC is 2.30pm.
