Swansea Bulls 17 Blue Bulls 48
In exciting and open game at Ystalyfera RFC, Bridgend emerged victorious over a determined Swansea outfit that put on their best display of the season. Over 100 people basked in the sunshine as the two teams took to the field, Bridgend opening the scoring after only four minutes when Mark Jones scored in the corner. Blue Bulls player/coach Kevin Ellis charged over from twenty five metres to extend the lead, Mark Davies converting. The big Bridgend forwards were in control and diminutive stand off Craig Fox darted over in the corner to make the score 14 nil after 15 minutes. Swansea eventually gained a foothold in the match as good defence lead by prop Gary Windle and loose forward Ivor Chowings harried the Bridgend team into uncharacteristic handling errors. A period of sustained pressure was rewarded as second row Nikki McLaughlin dived over from close range and with Paul Whapham converting the hosts were back in the game especially after Swansea stand off Richard Thomas dropped a goal to narrow the gap even further. Bridgend concluded the scoring in the first half as winger Gerwyn Care scored a try following a flowing handling move which made it 7-20. The second half continued to entertain the crowd as a smart handling movement

from the Bridgend backs put centre Carl Ellis in to score. Swansea, however, fought back with a well worked try which saw second row Paul Robert dive over in  the corner. At this point Bridgend put Allan Bateman and John Devereux onto the field and that turned the game decisively in their direction. Tries were created for Dan Williams, Bateman and Hwyel Davies in quick succession as Bridgend began to show the form that has taken them to the top of the league. The final minutes saw more sustained Swansea pressure on the Bridgend line and, following further tries from Bridgend's Care and Paul Morgan, Swansea's in-form scrum half Simon Bevan exploited a gap in the Bridgend defence to score under the posts. Swansea Bulls chairman, Phil Melling noted, "For a group of players, many of whom had never played rugby league before two months ago, this was a fantastically committed performance and I know that they have relished taking on the league leaders with all of their star names. Richard Thomas, Simon Bevan, Gary Windle, Craig Hunt, Richard Bull, Paul Whapham all deserve great credit for their performance but above all every one of our players today showed great passion for this game."
