Glamorgan 4 UWIC 12
In front of a crowd of over 100 that included all the Welsh Rugby League hierarchy, Cardiff-based UWIC university edged out their local rivals by a flattering 12-4 scoreline.

New Celtic Crusaders coach, John Dixon was in the crowd along with WRL chairman Mark Rowley and Development Officers Wayne Williams and Rhodri Thomas. What they witnessed was a gritty but exciting match that contained Cardiff Demons players on each side.

It’s not often that you can witness a 0-0 half-time score but that’s what occurred in this contest.

UWIC started the stronger. Wayne Broomfield was close to the line after only three minutes but knocked on. James Thatcher was also stopped metres from the line by a strong Glamorgan defence early on in the game.

Glamorgan skipper, Darren Jones came close for the home side but was tackled five metres out on the final tackle.

But it was Glamorgan’s Mark Hodge who came the closest to scoring in a tight first half, reaching over the line after being tackled but dropping the ball as he attempted to place it down.

UWIC had the first points on the board, 54 minutes into the game. The half-back pairing of Drabble and Kinnard, that was far more effective that their Glamorgan equivalent, paid off - Kinnard forcing his way over after being set-up by his team-mate.

Justin John looked like he’d equalised for Glamorgan just minutes later, but stepped into touch as he received the ball from a Chris Coombs kick.

UWIC’s Sam Audrey was sent off for fighting just two minutes later and Glamorgan immediately took advantage of the extra man – Justin John scoring in the corner to make it 4-4.

However, the playing field was level again three minutes later as Darren
Jones was sin binned for fighting.

Glamorgan had chances to win the game in the last ten minutes. Justin John was pulled into touch as he ran close to the line, while John knocked on from a poor Alex Gileys pass two minutes later, wasting a clear scoring chance.

It was UWIC who secured the derby with two tries in the last five minutes. Kinnard forced his way over for his second and Stu McReynolds wrapped things up with a try in the final second.
