Titans 14 Blue Bulls 40
12 out of 12 for Bridgend
The Bridgend Blue Bulls made it 12 wins out of 12 in this seasons Welsh Conference by defeating the Newport Titans 40-14 at Pil Harriers RFC with Carle Ellis claiming a hat-trick.

The Bulls had struggled to find 13 fit players to start the game and had to bring in 39-year-old Mark Jones onto the bench, despite him not having played a competitive match for more than 10 years, and things were looking bleak when centre Earl Palmer claimed a try for the Titans after just 2 minutes.

The game then turned into a scrappy affair and despite numerous chances Bridgend could not find a way across the line. Centre Lloyd Paget knocked on inches short after 10 minutes while a cross kick from Craig Fox just failed to find wing Ken Morris, and breaks from Dai Owen and Gareth David did not get the tries they deserved.

It took until the 25th minute for the Blue Bulls to get back on level terms and after some relentless pressure loose forward Carle Ellis went over under the posts after a break from Nathan Strong and two minutes later Matthew Wareham went over with Gareth David converting both to give the visitors a 12-4 lead.

The Titans then hit back with a try from Scott Heirene but Carle Ellis claimed his 2nd moments later to give his team a 10 point lead at half time.

Matthew Wareham extended the Bulls lead just three minutes into the 2nd half but the Titans did not give up and got back into the game with a try from stand-off Ross Palmer which was converted by Lee Churchill.

But after Craig Fox and Nathan Strong both claim close to scoring the superb Carle Ellis claimed his hat-trick after shrugging off a Neil McKim tackle and running 20 metres to the line. His hat-trick was made all the better as he had to be switched from centre to loose forward just moments before K.O due to the late withdrawal of Marcus Sainsbury.

Bridgend then took full control and scored two late tries through Gareth Davis and Craig Fox to secure a 14-40 victory and make it 26 consecutive victories.

For the Bulls Nathan Strong, Carle Ellis and Paul Morgan were superb and made numerous breaks while stand-off Gareth David showed maturity beyond his years, kicked brilliantly and was first-rate in both attack and defence.

Paul Jones, Stuart Morris and Craig Hopkins all did well in their Rugby League debuts while a huge well done must go to Mark Jones who answered a late SOS call to stick his boots on for the 1st time in a decade and despite looking totally worn-out afterwards said he was “as fit as ever”.

Others to shine were Matthew Wareham who thoroughly deserved his brace and Dan Williams who has been in top form all season.

For the Titans the Palmer brothers Earl and Ross both had good games while wings Kirk Johnson and Dan Nelmes always looked threatening.

The Blue Bulls have a two week break now before they face either Aberavon Fighting Irish or Torfaen Tigers in the Welsh Grand Final where they hope to welcome back their GB International trio of Kevin Ellis, Devereux and Bateman along with big hitting forwards Jon Purnell and Mike Davies.
