Valley Cougars 20 Blue Bulls 46
Blue Bulls win at Sardis Road
The Bridgend Blue Bulls withheld a second half comeback to defeat the Valley Cougars 46-20 at Sardis Road and deny the home side a victory in their first game at their new home. The Bulls were without John Devereux, Allan Bateman, Carl Hocking and Jon Williams but still managed to outscore the home side by eight tries to four.

The Bulls scored early on through a Mark Davies penalty goal and should have scored a try moments later but Paul Morgan dropped the ball with the try line begging. However the more experienced Kevin Ellis made no mistake after a great run and superb pass from Craig Fox put the former Great Britain international under the posts for the opening try of the game while two minutes later Craig Fox scored an excellent solo try dodging a number of tackles on the way to the try line. Fullback Mark Davies added both conversions.

The Cougars then hit back with a deserved try from Alan Williams but three tries in the final 10 minutes from the visitors gave the reigning Champions a 30-6 lead at the break. The tries came from Bridgend Rugby Union flanker Dean Fitzgerald, who had a fantastic match in his first ever proper game of Rugby League, Nathan Strong and Lenny Woodard with Mark Davies adding two conversions.

The Cougars came back strongly in the second half with Robert Jones scoring their second try of the match within the first minute, Nathan Strong hit back for the Bulls with his second but two quick tries from David Hayworth and Carl

Thomas brought the score to 30-26 before Gareth David and Ken Morris scored late tries for Bridgend.

This was a very entertaining game with Craig Fox, Carle Ellis, and Dean Fitzgerald starring for the Blue Bulls. Nathan Strong also made a big impression scoring two tries on his return to the team while Mark Davies managed to kick eight out of nine shots at goal, despite having played for Union side Llanharan the previous day.

For the Cougars, Alan Williams caused the most damage with some great runs but the it is fair to say that despite a magnificent effort from the home side, the Blue Bulls were always in control and never looked like losing.
